Wrestling finalizes lineup

In anticipation for the upcoming Pac-10 Tournament this weekend, the ASU wrestling team’s practice on Tuesday served as an opportunity for wrestle-offs at the 141- and the 165-pound weight classes to determine who would compete for the Sun Devils on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore.

Redshirt junior Josh Sandoval squared off against redshirt freshman Carlos Castro for the 141 spot, while junior Te Edwards and redshirt junior Kyle DeBerry faced each other for the 165-pound berth. The ticket to compete at the Pac-10s would be punched for the winner of a best of three series at both weight classes.

Sandoval won the first 141-pound matchup by fall. He grabbed the early lead in the match and didn’t let up, pinning Castro with eight seconds to go in the second period. The second match was a similar story, as Sandoval jumped out to a huge 11-0 lead after the first period en route to a 13-3 major decision.

Kyle DeBerry, who has not wrestled all year due to an elbow injury, won the 165-pound series 2-0 with a pair of dogfight wins. Edwards tied the first match at 1-1 with an escape in the third period to send it to overtime, and a scoreless overtime followed by a scoreless tiebreaking round led to a second overtime, in which DeBerry scored a takedown to win 3-1. The second match was another hard-fought battle, with DeBerry winning 3-2 in the first tiebreaker.

The Sun Devils’ lineup is now set for Sunday with Sandoval and DeBerry securing their spots to compete.
