A small fire broke out in the Tempe campus’ Memorial Union early Tuesday morning, but was quickly doused by the building’s sprinkler system.

ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said a piece of electrical equipment in the Jamba Juice on the building’s lower level somehow sparked the flames at around 5:30 a.m.

The building was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported, Newberg said.

“Thankfully it was limited to a small area,” she said.

The building usually opens at 6:30 a.m., but was closed until 7:45 Tuesday morning. Newberg said the building’s lower level was closed throughout the morning.

Mike Reichling of the Tempe Fire Department said the sprinkler system saved the building.

The building’s system was upgraded following a fire in November 2007, he said.
