ASU is home to three a cappella groups: Priority Male, the all-female Pitchforks and the co-ed TEMPEtations. This weekend, all three groups will perform on campus.
Pitchforks will hold its winter concert Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Business Administration C Wing, room 216.
Priority Male and the TEMPEtations will also perform. Priority Male will hold a concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in College of Design North’s room 60.
Priority Male will perform a variety of its own song arrangements by artists such as One Direction, Rihanna, Bon Jovi and the Beatles. The group plans to perform around 15 songs.
“We try not to put ourselves in one box,” said president and biology and psychology senior Steven Carter. “Especially because when we do gigs outside of campus, people want us to do certain songs.” The group typically performs at gigs once or twice a week.
“This week alone, we had five,” said Carter.
All three a cappella groups will be co-hosting the quarterfinals of the International Collegiate Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) on Feb. 2 at Tempe Center for the Arts, where they will compete against one another and five other groups from California and Arizona.
“The hecticness of the competition is real,” said Priority Male music director and music education senior Kevin Hougham, “but we tend to be friendlier with other groups; we work with them.”
The groups usually make guest appearances at each other’s performances. Priority Male and the TEMPEtations will perform at the Pitchforks’ concert, and the Pitchforks will perform at Priority Male’s.
Admittance to both concerts is free. Pitchforks will be accepting donations for the ICCA competition and is hosting a fundraiser at the Applebee’s on Broadway and Rural roads after the concert.
Priority Male will be hosting a raffle. Tickets are $1 each, or 10 for $15. Prizes include a $50 gift card to California Pizza Kitchen, a date with a Priority Male member of choice and a private performance by the group.
Why should students kick off their Saturday night at an a cappella concert?
“It’s everything that we’ve worked for this year, and it’s a preview for ICCA,” Carter said. “We’ll be singing, we’ll be dancing, and there’ll be lots of handsome gentlemen to look at.”
