The Video Game Odyssey: A Gamer’s Quick Guide to 2013

My earlier post was to help new gamers discover some old gems from the past. However, this time I have some recommendations of games to look out for on the horizon. 2013 promises to be an exciting year for gaming and I wouldn’t want you to miss a second of it.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs — The second in the Amnesia series, A Machine for Pigs brings back the horror with a new adventure in a mysterious town. Details on the game are mum, but judging from the trailer, it’s sure to be another nightmare-inducing experience. If you haven’t played the first in the series, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I highly suggest you do as soon as possible. It will give you a good idea of what to expect from A Machine for Pigs.

Elder Scrolls: Online — If you enjoyed the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, then perhaps you might be interested to continue your adventures in the world of Tamriel with ZeniMax Online Studios’ upcoming MMORPG. Set a millennium before the events of the earlier Elder Scrolls games, players will choose from one of three alliances and set forth to explore and battle across the continent of Cyrodiil.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time — The thieving adventures of Sly Cooper continue with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. However, this time around Sly Cooper must jump across time to recover the lost pages of the Thievius Raccoonus and as a result, some of Cooper’s ancestors will join the fun as playable characters with their own unique abilities. If you enjoy stealth and platforming antics then consider picking up this game and be sure to check out the earlier three games in the series.

Grand Theft Auto 5 — The successful action-sandbox series is on its way with its fifth installment, Grand Theft Auto 5. Set in the fictional city of Los Santos, GTA 5 will feature three playable protagonists, all on a similar quest for fame and fortune. In addition to being able to switch between protagonists, GTA 5 will have improved melee and gunplay as well as an expanded number of vehicles for players to enjoy.

God of War: Ascension — Set about 10 years before the first God of War game, God of War: Ascension takes players to the very beginning of Kratos’ vengeful journey to sever his ties to Ares, in which he must defeat the three Furies. The game will feature a multiplayer mode for up to eight players and will give players a more human Kratos, who had yet to be fully consumed by anger and hate.

Gears of War: Judgment — The Gears of War main story may have ended, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still room for a prequel. Enter Gears of War: Judgment, which features the return of several characters from the Gears of War series in an explosive adventure set before the events of the main series. When it comes to graphic, visceral gameplay and testosterone-fueled action, there’s little that can top a Gears of War game.

So then gamers, what games are you most looking forward to this year?
