Tempe Police confirmed Tuesday at a press conference that an ASU student was injured Monday inside an elevator in a Tempe apartment complex.
The victim, a member of the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, was taken to the hospital for his injuries after members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity severely beat him, Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley said.
Pooley said the victim struggled to get away from his attackers while at The District, an apartment complex in the 900 block of East Apache Boulevard, and was beaten up by several members of the fraternity.
At this time, only one arrest has been made, Pooley said. A 19-year-old ASU student and member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity was arrested last night on suspicion of aggravated assault and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
Pooley said only one person had been arrested so far, but there would be more arrests to come.
Tempe Chief of Police Tom Ryff said he had spoken to the victim’s parents and was told he was going into surgery Wednesday morning.
Police said there was no motive at this time for the assault but did say alcohol was involved.
Update: Two more men have been arrested in conjunction with the assault of an ASU student in a Tempe apartment complex’s elevator, according to a statement by Tempe Police.
