Sophomore setter Bianca Arellano is second on the ASU volleyball team with 15 service aces in 2013. So why isn’t this story about senior libero Stephanie Preach, who has 17? It’s because the topspin and raw speed behind Arellano’s serves makes volleyballs drop off right after crossing the net, often at speeds upward of 55 miles per hour. The serves are so fan-friendly that a successful one can often bring a big momentum shift in a close match. Arellano’s serve is different in that she tosses the ball much higher than her teammates and opponents, using that to generate more power, just one of the aspects of her uniquely effective serve.
