This year, the Sedona International Film Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary. I, along with three other ASU students, attended the festival as an intern on the social media team. As an aspiring filmmaker, my time at the festival allowed me to speak with notable directors, talent and other film enthusiasts, all of whom had thoughtful, unique outlooks on the industry. Their wisdom and advice were both encouraging and inspiring. Here are a few tips for fellow aspiring creatives:
Tip #7 - Want to make a good film? Before picking up your director’s hat, pick up a book.
Actress Stefanie Powers, best known for her role as Jennifer Hart in the 1980′s television series Hart to Hart, says, “Filmmaking is essentially storytelling. If you don’t read a few books from time to time, how are you going to tell a story?”
Tip #6 – You can have a career in the film industry along with a family. It simply requires balance.
Tip #5 - Believe in what you do.
Tip #4 – Films can change the world.
Tip #3 - Make an impact with your work, regardless of how big your audience is.
Tip #2 – You either have it or you don’t.
Tip #1 – Get rid of your plan B and C…and D.
