Help Haiti but don't ignore Darfur

(In response to Becky Rubenstrunk’s Monday column, “Don’t forget Haiti.”)

Reading Becky Rubenstrunk’s column concerning Haiti brought about a poignant thought: “What happens when our Haitian counterparts are no longer in the spotlight?”

Indeed, I ask the same question regarding Darfur.

What has happened since the “fad” of ‘Save Darfur’ campaigns was all the rage?

Have people forgotten? For I see no reports on the current status of that genocide, which is still occurring (albeit less frequent). Out of sight, out of mind as the old adage goes.

Haiti must be reconstructed not only in terms of buildings, but also its government, which is corrupt, as well as its economy.

Darfur must reconstruct its corrupt government, as well, and the profits from its natural resources taken from its country should be paid to the country in fair terms.

The profits should also be utilized in a way that will aid in the reconstruction of their country so the money does not continue to fund the corrupt.

Just because you don’t see it in the news, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
