Everything quickly unraveled for the ASU wrestling team Sunday, as wrestler after wrestler ended up face down on the mat.
The No. 24 Sun Devils (8-5, 3-1 Pac-10) didn’t record a point until the final match of the afternoon against No. 21 Oregon State (16-1, 4-1 Pac-10) and finished down by a final score of 35-5.
ASU coach Shawn Charles held his team in the locker room an hour and a half after the defeat.
“We just had a meeting to try to find out what individuals are thinking,” Charles said. “Why we’re in the situation we are in right now and why there was a lack of effort, emotion and everything in the dual. How could we not have wrestled better?”
Momentum was immediately in the favor of the Beavers after ASU junior Ben Ashmore (133) lost to No. 16 OSU sophomore Kelly Kubec in the first match of the day.
From there, the matches only got worse for the Sun Devils as No. 15 ASU junior Chris Drouin (141) was pinned by OSU freshman Mike Mangrum and OSU strung together nine straight victories.
“It’s crazy how [momentum] has an effect on the team,” junior Anthony Robles said.
The lone ASU victory on the night came from No. 3 Robles in the last match and pushed his overall record to 22-2.
The technical fall by Robles tied him for the most in ASU history with Nick Frost (2000-2004) at 17.
At that point the overall score was 35-0 and anyone Wells Fargo Arena not wearing orange and black was deflated.
“I came in expecting for us to come out and dominate,” Robles said. “That’s pretty much how we trained all week, and it was just a different story. It seemed like their guys wanted it more.”
Nearly every match was even through the first periods, but OSU outscored ASU 30-13 during the second periods and 23-9 in the thirds.
Overall, the Beavers outscored the Sun Devils 66-37 in matches not decided by falls but five of the nine losses came by less then six points.
“It’s hard to win in our sport when you’re not willing to go out and fight for seven minutes,” Charles said.
The rematch between No. 13 ASU senior Erik Nye and No. 15 Oregon State sophomore Clayton Jack provided revenge for the Beaver.
Several takedowns and obvious frustration from Nye ended the match at 7-1 in favor of Jack.
“I wanted to find out from them what was going on out there,” Charles said. “We really prepared hard for this dual. I’m numb from it. I can’t even be upset because I’m just so shocked by the performance of our athletes.”
The Sun Devils have to rebound quickly before they face No. 16 Cal Poly and No. 2 Iowa State this coming weekend.
“We really need to find out what we need to do to change this outcome,” Charles said. “We never want this to happen again.”
