The bout of dreary weather and draining economic times haven’t done a whole lot for University morale. Plus, week three is the time when classes really start to get annoying — have you noticed the quizzes and tests sneaking up on your syllabus? It’s becoming all too clear that we’re starting to see the last glows of winter break joy fade away as students get into the nitty-gritty of school. (And starting to see students studying on their longboards on the way to class.) But do not fear — Spring Break may still be a ways away but there are some things to look forward to in the coming weeks.
The return of “Lost:” What are you doing tonight at 7 p.m.? If you have a TV and have jumped on the pop-culture bandwagon at any point in the last five years, chances are you’ll be sitting down to watch the season six “Lost” premiere. Haven’t been keeping up with the show? Tempted to start watching? Don’t worry, it’ll only take you 72 straight hours to get caught up on all the seasons. So, forget class and work for the next three days, and by the time you get through to the season five finale, hopefully episode one of the final season will be up and running on Hulu.
Sunshine: Sure, we’ve had some rainy days, but compared to the rest of the country, we are enjoying some pretty incredible weather. Consider this: The high temperatures in the Midwest are hovering around freezing; here, it’s the perfect time of year to take a nap outside. This is the reason we all endure August and September — because you can be outside in January and February and enjoy yourself. The flowers are blooming, spring is in the air and it’s great.
The Super Bowl: Even if you’re not a fan of seeing two football teams clash on the field, the Super Bowl is a good excuse to kick back. Parties and barbeques fueling you with pizza and seven-layer bean dip will be a welcome respite from the post-winter-break shock. Even if you don’t understand the intricacies of a spread offense; the commercials, halftime show and junk food are enough reason to pick a couch and veg out.
Spring training: One of the saving graces of living in Arizona, the Cactus League, will be back in action one month from now. What part of watching a cheap baseball game on a warm (but not too warm) sunny day — laying on the lawn with food, beverage and sun-tan lotion in hand, of course — doesn’t that sound like Americana nirvana? … Yeah, exactly. We’ll see you at the stadium.
Gammage shows: Excellent entertainment is right on campus, and starting Feb. 11, “Mary Poppins” will be here to give you the spoonful of sugar you’ll need to keep going. The Broadway musicals keep coming with Tony award nominees and winners from “Jesus Christ Superstar” to Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps.” And if you’re in the mood for singing puppets, check out “Avenue Q” in March.
See, the near future’s forecast isn’t too bleak after all.
