Bravo to Sunday’s Super Bowl. This year’s Super Bowl should be one for the ages as the two best quarterbacks in the league, the Indianapolis Colts’ Peyton Manning and the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees, will be going head-to-head in Miami on Sunday. Even if you don’t like football, watching these two gunslingers go at it will be a spectacle not to be missed. Add in the usual Super Bowl festivities of barbecues, junk food and making bets, (not for money of course), and it will be a great Sunday.

Boo to budget cuts in Tempe. The city has proposed a $30 million reduction in its budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, and has proposed laying off city employees like policemen to help meet its goal. Not only will it take a personal toll, but Tempe residents and a large number of ASU students will see a drop in public services, some of the most significant being transportation and police cutbacks. No one should be happy about a loss of 108 police officers on the city streets — that is, of course, unless you party at the Vue.

Bravo to Teach For America’s partnership with ASU. After receiving a nearly $19 million private donation, the University’s College of Teacher Education and Leadership will be working with Teach For America to integrate some of the program’s training strategies into its curriculum. Teach For America generally works with recently graduated college students to overcome educational inequality in America. Giving college students post-graduation jobs and helping children are goals to be admired, and Teach For America is a great program for ASU to be involved with.

Bravo to Sarah Stevens. The former ASU thrower was named a recipient of the NCAA Top VIII Award for her success in competition, the classroom and the community. The two-time national champion, 15-time All-American and six-time Pac-10 Champion is one of the most decorated athletes in ASU history and took home the most prestigious award ever handed to an ASU athlete. Now training for the Olympics in 2012, Stevens has already made the Sun Devil community proud.

Boo to the less-fun aspects of school. Like it or not (we don’t), school is definitely up and running. We’re bracing ourselves for the first round of tests and quizzes in the next week or so. We’re calculating how lax our professors may or may not be, and how rarely we can attend class but still get a good grade. We’re already tired of school — and apathy is contagious. On the other hand, considering how much money we’re spending to be here, we’d better start appreciating it soon.
