It’s almost a week later, and I’m still complaining.
I’m pinching myself, because I still can’t believe what happened in last Sunday’s game between the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers.
Let’s revisit it.
The Broncos were on the Charger’s 1-yard line, in the final minute of the game.
Coming back to you now?
Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped out of his hands, bouncing off the grass and right into the arms of San Diego linebacker Tim Dobbins.
Referee Ed Hochuli mistakenly ruled it an incomplete pass.
Replay ruled it an obvious fumble.
However, on an inadvertent whistle following a forward pass, rules do not permit the officials to overturn the call. The ball was given to Denver on the ten-yard line and the Broncos went on to score, winning the game by a single point, 39-38.
Though Hochuli, one of the NFL's best referees, will be graded down for the call, Charger fans are still having trouble letting it go.
The league said it will consider changing this rule in the offseason.
Good for the NFL; too bad for the Chargers.
