The last time the ASU women’s basketball team faced Oregon in January, it did not fall into the trap of playing the up-and-down game that the Ducks thrive on, and thus came away with a 73-68 win.

That didn’t happen Saturday afternoon in Eugene.

Despite a season-high in points and shooting percentage, and career-best scoring outputs from senior guard Danielle Orsillo and junior forward Becca Tobin, the Sun Devils fell to UO 82-81 in a wild back-and-forth shootout at McArthur Court.

“We had to control the boards and take care of the ball, and we did not do those two things in the second half,” ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne said during her postgame radio interview. “Give our team a ton of credit for being there right down the stretch without doing those things, but it’s heartbreaking for them.”

The loss snaps ASU’s 10-game winning streak over the Ducks, which had dated back to the 2004-05 season.

Even though the Sun Devils (15-9, 7-6 Pac-10) shot 64.6 percent from the floor and the Ducks (16-8, 7-5 Pac-10) made just 38.5 percent of their field goals, UO put 17 more shots up because it won the offensive rebounding battle 22-7 and committed five fewer turnovers (16).

“It’s really painful right now, because obviously rebounding is a huge strength of ours,” Turner Thorne said. “If we just step to our player and get our box-outs, we win by 10 or 15 points. They defended this team, they made [UO] miss and then we didn’t finish our defense.”

The defeat also puts a damper on the performances of Orsillo, who scored 29 points to set a new career mark for the second consecutive game, and Tobin, who also scored a career-high 20 points.

“The thing about Oregon is they’re going to give you good looks,” Turner Thorne said. “I think we got the ball to the right people at the right time. … [but] that’s not where we’re going to win consistently. We’ve got to get it done on the other end.”

The Sun Devils looked like they would pull away in the second half when a layup by sophomore center Kali Bennett capped a 14-4 run to give ASU a 58-47 lead with 14:54 to play.

But then, UO stormed back with its own 12-0 spurt to grab a 59-58 advantage on a 3-pointer by senior guard Taylor Lilley at the 11:25 mark.

Both teams then traded leads until back-to-back 3-pointers by Lilley and senior guard Micaela Cocks made the score 71-64 with 5:46 to go, which gave the Ducks the upper hand for good.

ASU made one final push when it sliced the Ducks’ lead to 78-76 on a rare four-point possession with less than a minute to play. Orsillo was fouled on a made layup and missed the free throw, but a scramble for the rebound resulted in a jump ball that allowed ASU to keep possession. Tobin then converted a layup with 20 seconds remaining.

But ASU was forced to foul from then on, and UO connected on all four of its free throws in the final 15 seconds.

The Sun Devils took an eight-point lead at the 7:57 mark of the first half when a pair of free throws by Tobin made the score 31-23, but the Ducks outscored ASU by seven the rest of the period to trail just 44-43 at the break.

Lilley finished the game with 26 points, including five 3-pointers, while Cocks added 20 of her own. Sophomore forward Amanda Johnson recorded 13 points and seven rebounds.
