Despite a summer of hype for the ASU football team’s biggest non-conference game in years, the contest yielded little suspense.

Despite threatening several times on drives in the second half, the Sun Devils could not take advantage of a myriad of opportunities to make the game close, losing to No. 3 Georgia, 27-10.

ASU (2-2, 1-0 Pac-10) rode the emotion of an electric, sold-out crowd and hung tough with the Bulldogs to start the game, but by sundown it was clear that Georgia’s talent was superior.

The Sun Devils had zero success running the ball against Georgia’s fast front seven.

ASU managed just four yards rushing in the game, zero in the second half. The total was the fewest by a Sun Devil team since 2002.

Playing without senior running back Keegan Herring, the Sun Devils could not match the speed of Georgia’s swarming defense. Junior running back Dimitri Nance had just 12 yards on 10 carries.

ASU came out strong in the second half with a 9-play, 71-yard drive that was capped off by a 6-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter to senior tight end Andrew Pettes.

Defensively, the Sun Devils had few answers for any facet of the UGA offense.

Freshman wide receiver A.J. Green torched the ASU secondary with eight catches for 159 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs also had great success running the ball with sophomore Knowshon Moreno, who had 149 yards on 23 carries as well as two touchdowns.

Many of the 72, 955 fans - the largest crowd at Sun Devil stadium in 17 years - headed to the parking lot early as ASU failed to make up ground in the second half.

Carpenter was pressured often on the night as he was sacked four times by an aggressive UGA defense.

Carpenter completed 23 of 36 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown.
