The ASU women’s golf team didn’t take long to find its form.
After finishing fourth in their opening tournament two weeks ago, the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, the No. 1 Sun Devils bounced back to capture the title at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson.
ASU finished with an 8-over par 576, 12 shots ahead of second-place UA.
The tournament, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 after weather wreaked havoc on the Arizona National Golf Club on Monday.
Four of ASU’s five golfers earned top-10 finishes, led by senior Juliana Murcia’s tie for second at 1-under par. After logging a 3-over 74 during the first round, Murcia shot a 4-under 67 on Tuesday.
“She was very excited to leave her mark on her last tournament in Tucson,” ASU coach Melissa Luellen said of Murcia.
It was the second straight top-10 finish for Murcia, a Bogota, Colombia, native who has been ASU’s top finisher in both of its spring tournaments.
Touted freshman Jennifer Johnson shot even-par on Tuesday to finish at 2-over, good enough for a fourth-place tie.
It was the fourth top-10 finish in five events for Johnson to begin her ASU career. It was her first top-5 finish as a Sun Devil.
Sophomore Carlota Ciganda, the defending Pac-10 champion, logged a 3-over to tie for seventh, and junior Jaclyn Sweeney finished a shot back at 4-over to tie for 10th, her third top-10 showing of the season.
Rounding out the team scoring for the Sun Devils was sophomore Giulia Molinaro, who tied for 67th at 18-over par.
Competing as an unattached individual was Larissa Eruera, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, who finished tied for 40th at 12-over par.
While ASU was certainly happy with its first tournament win of the spring, the Sun Devils said doing it on the rival’s home course made the victory a little sweeter.
“We were really excited to take the trophy from the Wildcats, and we did our job,” Johnson said.
Sophomore Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State won medalist honors by five strokes, finishing with a 6-under 136, including a blistering 5-under 66 on Tuesday.
The Pac-10 had another strong showing during the tournament — which had its second scheduled round on Monday cut short due to heavy rain — as Stanford finished third, followed by California in fourth.
The Sun Devils will be back in action Monday at the Bruin Wave Invitational at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Clarita, Calif.
