Politics by design

“Fair trial my arse!” floated down the runway on a picket sign held by a model in “Guantanamo Bay orange” underwear by British designer Vivian Westwood at London Fashion Week. It shouldn’t be a surprise that fashion designers are a political bunch and will use their prominent stage to voice their opinions — and in the state of things, they aren’t holding back.

Sonia Rykiel’s runway was filled with optimism and Barack Obama. A blue and white cable knit dress with “OBAMA” emblazoned across the front and shifts with a Warholesque version of his face flounced down the runway.

Runway to Change has Obama-themed shirts from designers like Tory Birch, Vera Wang and Zac Posen available on Obama’s Web site. Other designers like Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam and Diane Von Furstenberg have bags and other accessories on the site as well.

Donatella Versace even dedicated her spring/summer ’09 collection to Obama.

Check the law before you whip out one of these designer tees on voting day. Some places have put a legal ban on political clothing at polls. Virginia and D.C. have ruled that within 40 feet of the polling place, there should be no clothing or buttons in order to maintain a sense if neutrality.

McCain followers needn’t feel too let down by the lack of designer support. Though there are fewer, less glamorous options available on the McCain site, someone did name their baby Sarah McCain Palin — and that is support that will have to last through the seasons.
