In addition to Tyra Banks’ other works, America’s Next Top Model and the Tyra Show, Stylista straddles the line between indulgent guilty pleasure and painfully awful television.
The CW’s newest show is a competition to be a junior editor at Elle Magazine and work for Anne Slowey, the fashion news director.
The show attempts to emulate The Devil Wears Prada, yet Slowey is the worst Miranda Priestly impersonator ever. She first appears stepping out of a car in heels she can barely walk in, emerging dramatically from an elevator and throwing her jacket on the front desk a la Meryl Streep. Then she proceeds to clod her way across the fake Elle office to her “desk” without saying a word to anyone.
The contestants’ first challenge was to create a well balanced and “stylish” breakfast for Slowey. When critiquing the minions, Slowey picks apart the meals prepared on silver trays. How could the contestants not know she only takes her coffee iced with a small straw?
In the competition, they must complete tasks such as giving themselves makeovers, finding story ideas in Chinatown and laying out and writing copy for a contributor’s page in the magazine — which isn’t so interesting to watch.
The contestants themselves are an eclectic range of people. In the first two episodes, there is enough crying and diva attitude among the contestants to last the rest of the competition.
The show relies on that drama instead of the actual job or giving viewers a realistic perspective of the magazine…unless Elle wants viewers to believe this is really what it’s like to work there.
Watch Stylista (if you dare) Wednesdays at nine p.m. on the CW.
