Criminal justice sophomore takes title in Rock Band 2 contest
With finals looming, students at ASU’s West campus had a chance to loosen up and rock out.
The Rock Band 2 tournament, which took place in the West campus’ Diablo Recreation Center on Monday, brought student rockers from across the campus together to compete for a championship shirt and a spot in the Hall of Champions.
While another Rock Band tournament took place earlier in the semester, one that involved team play with everyone covering all of the instruments, Monday's competition focused on individual play.
Instead of whole teams taking part, one person played at a time on the instrument and song of his or her choice, aiming for the highest score.
Criminal justice sophomore Anthony Scorzetti, who played guitar on the Avenged Sevenfold song, “Almost Easy,” won the tournament. He scored 66,003 points and hit 98 percent of the notes.
“I’m shocked because I’m not that good at the game,” Scorzetti said.
He said he was a fan of the game and decided to give the competition a try.
“I just thought it was fun,” he said. “It feels good because I [actually] play guitar.”
The competition gave life sciences junior Shannon Sampley her first chance to play Rock Band.
“I actually like Guitar Hero, and I thought that if I was good at that I’d be good at Rock Band,” she said. “I always love playing video games.”
Nearly every student who showed up for Monday's event chose to play guitar, rather than the game’s bass, drums or microphone.
“It was a unique event that we wanted to try,” said Mike Beadle, program coordinator for the Diablo Performance and Recreation Center.
Although there have been a number of traditional intramural programs at the West campus focusing on sports like basketball and flag football, Beadle said there weren’t any programs for those who weren’t as interested in athletics.
“We just wanted to offer an event aimed toward a different demographic of students,” he said. “This is the first time we’ve ever tried this sort of thing.”
Beadle, who hosted the event, is also a fan of Rock Band. His favorite song is “Any Way You Want It” by Journey, and he plays it on guitar and bass.
