Yesterday, the Associated Press NCAA college basketball rankings came out.
For the first time in history the ASU men’s basketball team was the highest-ranked team in the Pac-10.
Somebody stop the press!
OK, on second thought, that’s probably not in my best interest.
But nonetheless, somebody stop something.
It’s taken 31 seasons for this to occur.
There have been good times. Like in March 1981 when the Sun Devils were second in conference rankings behind Oregon State.
That’s back when guys like Lafayette Lever and Byron Scott held the hardwood.
Back during what were decades of impotence from a football-themed university.
Maybe it’s about time.
Or maybe they’re just getting started. Should ASU sweep the Washington schools this week, not only will it remain the highest-ranked team in the conference, but it’ll also be the front-runner for the regular season Pac-10 crown.
Something, as you can guess, they have yet to achieve.
This isn’t a rally cry or a pep rally. I firmly expect the bricks in Wells Fargo Arena to be shaking this week. Shaking with noise. Shaking with anticipation. Shaking with pride.
It’s taken 31 years for it to happen, so I don’t think anyone will mind.
