There are plenty of destinations around the Valley to get some yummy frozen yogurt, but after you try Chill you’ll declare a new favorite obsession.
Chill is tucked away in the same building complex that houses Pita Jungle, located at the northwest corner of Apache Boulevard and Dorsey Lane, just east of the Tempe campus. The combination of friendly owners and superior soft-serve has consistently brought in health nuts, loads of college-aged girls, families and just about everyone else in the Tempe area since opening six months ago, says co-owner Diana Rodriguez.
Chill serves up dairy-free, low fat yogurt in a chic and trendy atmosphere — reminiscent of yogurt shops found in Scottsdale but without the smugness. They feature two main flavors: vanilla soy and the tart and tangy “original.” Hooray for soy yogurt that doesn’t taste yucky.
Both soy enthusiasts and dairy lovers will swear it’s the “real thing.”
Chill doesn’t stop at frozen yogurt. There are also 18 types of gelato to choose from. Rodriguez says they use whole milk instead of cream in their gelato, which reduces fat significantly compared to most American brand ice creams. “It’s just fresh fruit, sugar, milk and our secret,” says Rodriguez. And the yogurt? “A four ounce serving has approximately 80 calories,” says Rodriguez.
The yogurt is best when decorated with any combination of the chopped fresh fruits offered. It’s refreshing that the fruit toppings at Chill don’t look like they’ve spent serious time in the freezer or in heavy fructose corn syrup. Fruit is brought in daily, chopped when freshest and never frozen, says Rodriguez. The selection includes strawberries, kiwis, blueberries, pineapple, mango and whatever else is in season.
The only possible downside is that adding multiple fruit toppings can make the dessert a little pricey — it’s easy to find yourself walking out with a $5 yogurt. However, for those on a college budget, the yogurt splurging won’t go in vain. Chill offers stamp cards, and on the tenth visit, the yogurt is free.
“I hit ten stamps pretty quickly,” says tourism and recreation senior Lisa Gruttadauro. Gruttadauro says every time she passes the Apache intersection she has to turn and stop at Chill.
Chill may be the only place in the Valley you can drop in and get your soy yogurt fix, but Rodriguez says they’d like to expand.
We’d like that too.
