The ASU women’s golf team will welcome three new golfers to their No. 2-ranked team this spring season, after an impressive fall campaign.
Seventh-year coach Melissa Luellen said sophomore Jaclyn Sweeney — who transferred to ASU from Oklahoma State — and freshmen Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro will be key additions to the team.
While the team will gain three talented golfers, it will have to deal with the loss of No. 1-ranked collegiate player Anna Nordqvist who turned professional after ASU’s fall season.
Despite the loss of Nordqvist, Luellen has high expectations for the new golfers heading into spring play.
“All three of these players are top class, and losing one but adding three sounds like pretty good math to me,” Luellen said.
In addition to the new blood, ASU returns senior Azahara Munoz, the 2008 NCAA individual champion.
Munoz won her title in climactic fashion, knocking down a 25-foot putt on the first playoff hole against UCLA’s Tiffany Joh.
Three Sun Devil golfers finished in the top 10 during the NCAA Fall Preview in September.
The team also put up impressive numbers during the Mason Rudolph Invitational in September and at the Derby Invitational in October.
A poll in Golfweek has the team ranked No. 1, while Golfstat ranked the Sun Devils No. 2.
All golfers from last semester will return, with the exception of Nordqvist.
Luellen said the team’s chances for postseason success are very good.
“I think our goals this season are to win the Pac-10 and NCAA Championship,” Luellen said. “This is a year that we have the talent and depth more than ever before.”
The team will compete in its first tournament of the spring season when it travels to Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 9 for the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
