As shocking as it is to me, I actually kind of love downtown Phoenix. I honestly could count on my fingers the amount of times I had been downtown before all my classes moved to the Downtown campus last semester. And, originally, I was annoyed and unhappy about being uprooted from the Tempe campus that I had come to know so well. But now, after the opening of the light rail and with a little bit of guidance from my fellow SPMers, I’ve decided this is the best move I could’ve made.

Sure, sometimes I miss the old comfort of Tempe, a place where I know exactly how far I am from a Taco Bell at all times, but downtown’s got style. Not only does it have style, it has awesome local shops that are all about nurturing the culture that is beginning to flourish in the area (“Love it or Leave it” pg. 4).

So, in the spirit of loving downtown I thought I’d share some of the things I love about it in hopes to convince any lingering non-believers that yes, downtown is steezy.

That’s A Wrap – 2022 N. 7th St. www.thatsawrapphx.com

A delicious, and perfect lunching spot. Not too spendy, high on flavor and very health friendly, this is a must if you’re downtown and looking for a meal.

The place can be pretty busy during the lunch rush, downtowners know their stuff when it comes to eating, so try going for an early or late lunch. Get the berry lemonade, so scrumptious!

Halo Precision Piercing – 10 W. Camelback www.halopiercing.com

You will be hard pressed to find a more professional, yet totally approachable and friendly piercing place — not to mention they have the largest jewelry selection in town. In fact, according to Halo, they have the biggest selection in the whole state.

Located right off the Camelback stop on the light rail, possibly being disowned by your parents is only a light-rail ride away. But beauty is pain right? RIGHT?

Arizona Science Center -600 E. Washington St www.azscience.org

There is an IMAX! And a planetarium! AND they have an Adults’ Night Out event every First Friday. As in the center is open after hours and there are no children allowed.

There are lots of hands-on exhibits, and, sure, most are geared toward children, but once you shove them out of the way you can some fun too. Admission is only $7 with student ID, making this an affordable and fun place for a date.

For other spots, make sure to check out Jessica VanZalen’s article “Love it or Leave it,” on page 4, which is chockfull of some of the great places to visit and support while downtown.

Remember, downtown has feelings too, so don’t neglect it like I did for all those years, or else it might tell your mom about those piercings you take out when you go home on breaks.
