After two rounds of play, the No. 10 ASU men’s golf team is in second place at John Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

The Sun Devils held a six-stroke lead over LSU at the end of the first round on Sunday, after posting a 2-over 290.

Sophomore James Byrne golfed a 4-under par 68 in the first round of the tournament.

The Tigers roared back on Monday to take a two-shot lead over the Sun Devils.

Also golfing in the tournament for ASU are sophomores Stephan Gross and Jesper Kennegard and juniors Tristan Bierenbroodspot and Knut Borsheim.

The team will continue the three-day tournament — which began Sunday — through Tuesday.

The No. 1 ASU women’s golf team is also competing this week in the Wildcat Invitational in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

The Sun Devil women sat in second place after two rounds, three shots behind No. 2 UCLA.

ASU shot a 7-over 295 in the opening round, but scored a 2-over 290 in the second round to creep closer to the Bruins.

Junior Juliana Murcia continued her torrid pace to lead the Sun Devils with a career-low 5-under 67. Her previous career low in a round was 70. She is currently tied for first.

Freshman Carlota Ciganda is tied for third after posting a 3-under 69 in the second round.

Although a few members of the team were ill at the start of the tournament, ASU coach Melissa Luellen said she is optimistic about the rest of the tournament.

Luellen told the ASU athletic department’s Web site that freshman golfer Giulia Molinaro had a very high fever before the start of the tournament but still played in the opening round.

Luellen also said that sophomore Jaclyn Sweeney fell ill and was not able to keep any food or liquids down.

The team is also playing without defending NCAA individual champion senior Azahara Munoz.

The team will conclude the three-day tournament in Mexico on Tuesday.

Murcia picked up where she left off after winning the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge last week in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The junior golfed a 1-over 214 in that tournament, with a breakdown of 70-71-73 over the three days.
