There’s nothing sexier than an accentuated calf perched on top of a high, pointy stiletto. The high heel has been around since the 17th century, but the 21st century heel comes a variety of shapes and styles.
Jessica Wenger, interior design ASU alum and Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising fashion design alum, says, “There is no better way to feel sexy and fun than when you are exploring the city five inches higher than normal.”
Wenger explains that the three basic heel shapes are stiletto, wedge and chunky or box-shaped. But in her own wardrobe, “A tried and true staple is a peep toe, stiletto pump,” she says. The peep toe is really popular right now.
To find the right shoe, Wenger suggests bringing a friend along. “Having another opinion can keep you from looking like a magic act,” Wenger says.
Shapes
The shape of the heel can make or break a look. The www.shoegodess.com is a blog dedicated purely to shoes. There are five different “goddesses” that write, and they offer tons of fashion tips while keeping their readers updated on the newest styles. The site is a great place to start looking at different shaped heels, and what each style brings to a look.
Katlyn Couleur, anthropology sophomore, describes her style as simple and conservative. She prefers classy stilettos for their sex appeal.
If students want to try something unique, Wenger suggests trying shoes with, “special architectural cut-outs and designs.”
Many designers are coming out with shoes that have different shapes in the heel, or heels with completely innovative shapes. Salvatore Ferragamo and Giuseppe Zanotti make excellent shoes with balance-defying heel shapes.
Louis Vuitton makes a heel that is a hybrid stiletto and wedge. Dior and Marc Jacobs both have numerous styles in gravity-defying shapes. Chanel even makes a shoe with a light bulb for a heel.
These crazy heels are a great way for a creative girl to show off some fashionable spunk. But Couleur warns that these heels don’t look good on everyone. “They take away from the simple class of heels,” she says.
Brands
Any girl who has experienced a shoe fetish knows that heels can get expensive. For designer shoes, Wenger recommends Christian Louboutin or Zanotti. However, these shoes often cost around $800. Last Chance, Nordstrom Rack, and Buffalo Exchange are good places to hunt for reduced prices on expensive heels.
Wenger also recommends Aldo for a more reasonably priced selection. “They have perfected the knock-off,” Wenger says. She also recommends Steve Madden.
“Expensive designer shoes are always fun to have, and I think everyone should have at least one pair of designer heels in their closet, ”just don’t spend your rent on a pair of shoes Wenger says. “Don’t shop on impulses. Figure out where you will go out the most and how often you will be wearing the heel.”
Also try shopping online at zappos.com. DSW is another great place with nice brands at cheaper prices.
Whatever ASU students are looking for, there is a shoe that fits with every style. It’s just a matter of finding it.
