Cut to the chase

Hair has become the “it” accessory as long as a student knows how to cut it, style it and wear it right.

Girls can do amazing things with their long, short, curly or straight hair. Ponytails, braids, spikes and even waves.

But what about the boys? What cuts and styles work the best for them?
Renon Leipold, a hair stylist for Great Clips, says “fades, also known as blends, are the most popular cut for men in their mid-20s and the 70s layered shag is big for guys in their late teens, early 20s.”

Although the fade and shag are popular, some haircuts only work well for specific hair types.

Guys with thick hair benefit getting a cut with layers.

“Anyone with thick hair who doesn’t have layers ends up looking like Alice from the cartoon strip Dilbert. When it is all one length, their hair starts to form into a big triangle,” Leipold says.

Guys with thin hair need to have a cut with some even layers.

“Balance will give the most body in a cut,” Leipold says.

Any guy with curly or wavy hair will also benefit from putting in some layers.

“A lot of layers help the hair to work and style better,” Leipold says.

It’s hard to pin point what you want in a hair cut but when you figure it out, make sure you bring in a picture of that style for the stylist to go by.

“Pictures help when someone is having a hard time describing what is they want,” Leipold says.

Once a guy has gone through the haircutting process, it’s time to style it.

“When styling, it’s best to have an even distribution of the product on the head. Rub it into the scalp evenly and then proceed to style,” Leipold says.

There are many styling products out there for guys to choose from but Leipold recommends American Crew: Fiber and Forming, “because it doesn’t get hard like gel does.”
