ASU golf teams finish second at tourneys

The ASU men’s and women’s golf teams both finished strong in tournaments this week.

The No. 1 ASU women’s team tied for second place at the Wildcat Invitational, scoring a total of 14-over 878 and tying with USC.

The breakdown of the team’s total scores for the three-day tournament was 302-287-289.

UCLA won the tournament with a final score of 5-over 869.

Three Sun Devil women finished in the top 10 after the final round.

Freshmen Carlota Ciganda led ASU in the second round and ended with a final score of 2-under 214 for the tournament, tying for third place.

Junior Juliana Murcia finished strong as well, with a score of 1-over 217 that landed her a seventh-place finish, tying with ASU senior Jennifer Osborn.

The women’s next tournament will be the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., from March 8 to 10.

The No. 10 ASU men’s golf team finished in second place at the John Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla., which also wrapped up play on Tuesday.

The team finished eight strokes behind first-place LSU and individually placed three golfers in the top-20.

Sophomore James Byrne finished the tournament in fifth place, while sophomore Stephan Gross finished in ninth place.

Junior Knut Borsheim finished in 17th place.

Byrne finished with a 2-over par 218, while Gross shot 5-over par 221.

Borsheim landed a final score of 10-over 226.

The ASU men will next be in action in the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 9, in Fresno, Calif.
