Coming off an impressive second-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational last week, where three Sun Devil golfers finished in the top 10, the ASU women’s golf team is prepping to compete in the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., which begins on Sunday.

The women will be playing at the Redtail Golf Club from March 8 to 10.

Freshmen golfers Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro, seniors Jennifer Osborn and Azahara Munoz and junior Juliana Murcia will attend the tournament.

Ciganda led the Sun Devils in the Wildcat Invitational, shooting a 2-under 214 to tie for third.

Sun Devil coach Melissa Luellen was impressed with the results of the team’s last tournament, which took place in Mexico from Feb. 23 to 24.

“We had two players that were very ill during the Wildcat Invitational so we weren’t at full strength, but I’m very happy that we still competed and finished second,” Luellen said.

The coach also said she is optimistic about the upcoming tournament.

“I think we have a very strong lineup, stronger than we’ve had all spring,” Luellen said. “Azahara is coming back to compete in this tournament, and she’s been injured.”

Luellen said the NCAA champion is a very strong asset to the team, and this will be Munoz’s first tournament of the spring season.

In other golf-related news, Munoz has accepted an invitation to the Kraft Nabisco Championships that will take from March 30 to April 5 at the Mission Hill Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

The ASU women’s golf team will also gain three new golfers in the fall. No. 16 (Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings) Jennifer Johnson, Alessia Knight and Larissa Eruera will join the Sun Devil squad next season.

Johnson has also accepted an invitation to join Munoz at the Kraft Nabisco Championships.
