While the majority of ASU students were vacationing on spring break, the ASU men’s golf team spent its time away from school with a busy schedule on the links.
The No. 9 Sun Devils wrapped up play on Sunday at the Southern Highlands Championship in Las Vegas.
The team finished 10th in the tournament with a 3-day score of 30-over par.
After shooting 21-over par in the first round, the Sun Devils had the second-best second round in the tournament field with a 3-under par.
ASU couldn’t keep up the pace on the final day of the tournament, though, shooting a 12-over par.
“We played very poorly the first day, very well the second day and average the third day,” ASU coach Randy Lein said. “We played against a very strong field because most of the teams that competed were in the top 20.”
Lein said the match in Las Vegas was the hardest tournament the team will play this season until nationals.
Before playing in Las Vegas, the Sun Devils started their spring break in Fresno, Calif., at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
The team finished in 16th place in the tournament with a 3-round score of 47-over par.
The Sun Devils shot a 15-over par in the final round.
Lein said he was hoping for a better outcome.
“We had an opportunity to play some guys who don’t normally start,” Lein said. “I thought we had prepared, and we were hoping to show the depth of our team, but unfortunately we did not.”
The tournament marked the first time during the spring season that ASU has not finished in the top-10.
ASU juniors Tristan Bierenbroodspot and Braxton Marquez both shot a final round score of 3-over par 75, while freshman Chan Kim shot a 5-over par in the final round to finish with a 13-over par 229.
Sophomore Scott Pinckney finished the Classic with a 22-over par 238, and fellow sophomore James Byrne checked in with a 15-over par 231.
The team will head to San Diego on March 22 to play in the Calloway Match Play, the only match play event of the year, which Lein said is to prepare for the newly implemented post-season format.
