Arizona’s unique weather provides residents certain opportunities that other states may not.

During the winter, it’s completely reasonable to wear a t-shirt and shorts during the day — at least for those who live South of Sedona.

During the summer, it’s not completely unrealistic for the temperature to stay near or at 100 degrees deep into the night.

Though summer doesn’t technically begin until June 21, anyone who’s experienced an Arizona summer knows this — by March, it’s time to hit the pool.

With pool season comes certain choices. Certain choices for men, specifically. Guys need to choose which, if any, swim attire they likely will sport at the pool.

Choices run across the board (pun intended) from Speedos, thongs and trunks to board shorts and regular basketball shorts.

Psychology junior Freddie Pastrana feels comfort and national pride is the best choice.

“I like trunks — but I don’t like that mesh that’s on the inside,” Pastrana says. “Also, they need to be below the knee — none of that old school stuff.”

As far as the national pride is concerned, Pastrana would love a pair of trunks emblazoned with Puerto Rico. “I love my country. I’m extremely proud. That would be so great,” Pastrana says of his wish for swim trunks that represent his homeland.

Some other styles include jammers (think the Olympic swim team), briefs and just plain old athletic shorts.

“It’s pretty much all individual,” sophomore architecture student Jessie Purcell says. “A guy has to wear things he looks good in. If he buys them and they fit well and he likes them, then what’s the matter?”

Pastrana isn’t as philosophical.

“Regardless of what brand or style I wear, they cannot be too tight,” he says. “None of that Olympic stuff — those are built for speed not for recreation.”

Purcell agrees with that notion.

“Short-shorts and anything by Speedo are big no-nos,” she says. “Unless you are on the swim team.”

The fact that Arizona heats up quick and easy like a Hot Pocket doesn’t have to be a completely negative thing. The pools are open now. Grab a new pair of shorts, young man, and head towards water.
