The ASU soccer team’s season is off to a rocky start.

The Sun Devils (1-1-1) started their season with a 4-2 win over NAU Aug. 22, but their weekend road trip to California was marred with disappointment.

ASU made its first stop in Malibu, Calif. to take on Pepperdine, ending in a 1-1 tie.

The Sun Devils put a lot of offensive pressure on the goalkeeper in the first half, though they weren’t able to put any shots in the back of the net.

Their 10-2 advantage in shots attempted foreshadowed the redemption that would come 15 minutes into the second period.

Junior midfielder Carly Kallas scored her first goal of the season, knocking senior defender Kylla Sjoman’s corner kick into the net for a second-half lead. Kallas’ three shots were the most on the team.

“We were playing pretty even with them,” Kallas said. “We were doing all we needed to get done, but with the first score the momentum definitely picked up.”

ASU’s unfamiliarity with Pepperdine’s soccer field, coupled with an injury to freshman forward Courtney Tinnin, was just enough to slow the Sun Devil’s momentum, and allow for a goal by the Waves.

“The field at Pepperdine is very small,” coach Kevin Boyd said. “They had a pretty good home field advantage.

“Coming [off] of the injury we didn’t respond well. A tie isn’t a terrible result, but it really doesn’t reflect the way we played at the beginning of that game.”

The status of Tinnin remains unclear.

The team’s opportunity to salvage the trip came at the next stop in San Diego. But the Sun Devils lost their first game of the season, 2-1, to the Aztecs.

For the second time in three games, the Sun Devils gave up an early goal, and found themselves playing from behind.

Sophomore forward Karin Volpe tied the game in the second half, but the Sun Devils were unable to create many scoring opportunities after that.

The Aztecs came back to score the winning goal in the last three minutes, a result that Boyd deemed unacceptable.

“Right now we’re not developing,” Boyd said. “I’m disappointed with the way the games went this weekend.

“The goal is to get better every game, and we didn’t this weekend. We need to put our best effort forward every game. Anything less than that is just unacceptable.”

The Sun Devils returned to Tempe Sunday evening, and are gearing up for their first home match against Texas Christian University Friday.
