“ASU students could contribute a lot by helping Lost Boys with their English skills, their friendships and in so many other ways,” says Board President, Brenda Felldin.
According to the AZ Lost Boys Web site at azlostboyscenter.org, there are seven ways anyone can help. “We depend 100% on the generosity of others,” the Web site states.
1. Donate to the Lost Boys Center by check or credit card at the Web site.
2. Purchase a glazed cow or photos of Lost Boys by Loren Anderson.
3. Become a mentor or volunteer.
4. Tutor the Lost Boys and Girls in English and Math.
5. Become an employer to hard working, energetic young men and women.
6. Offer an academic scholarship to the Lost Boys.
7. Handmade quilts are for sale and also won by raffle.
A mentor at the AZ Lost Boys Center is a teacher, an advisor, a coach and a friend. Mentors help with English skills and job hunting, while also taking their new friend to a concert, a museum, to the mall or out to eat.
“We always rely heavily on the volunteer,” Deng says.
According to the job description, mentors must be 25 years of age or older, own a valid Arizona driver’s license and be able to commit to the position for six months.
Volunteers at the center need not meet such specific standards.
Simply fill out the volunteer application at the AZ Lost Boys Center Web site at azlostboyscenter.org to join.
There are several ways to contribute time and effort, including general office support, assistance with ongoing needs and help with special events. Also, the AZ Lost Boys Center needs volunteers during the week for secretarial duties.
In addition to the regular volunteers, the center plays host to special occasions such as birthday parties, fundraising events, and sales, and extra hands are always welcome.
The AZ Lost Boys Center also has a wish list to give people more options to help.
