It’s a simple yet revolutionary concept: allow people to listen to any song, for free, while avoiding legal issues by giving credit where credit is due (including monetary compensation).

That is precisely what justhearit.com aims to do.

It was created by University of Southern California student Nicolae Ivanescu and Emory University student Cosmin Panait, and according to the Web site, it aims to “change the stereotype that free music is illegal while immersing the user in a unique visual experience.”

The site allows visitors to listen to supposedly any song in its entirety including some variations and remixes of songs. It also allows users to create playlists. All free of charge.

At this point nothing indicates a very unique visual experience. While the modern design is appealing with a sleek look, all-black screen, lighter text and a simple, user-friendly layout, it does not suggest anything extremely visually engaging.

It is hard to judge the site at this point. It is not fully developed, but the potential is evident. Just Hear It is in Beta testing according to the site, with the intention of becoming “the place for music on the online.”

At this point not all features are available, such as membership that would allow users to save and organize their music. Also, users are not yet subjected to advertisements. Panait says advertisments will appear as development finishes sometime next month.

This will allow for the service to be free to users and completely legal as the revenue from advertisments will go towards paying for the use of the songs.

For the time being, the site does an excellent job of serving its purpose of allowing visitors to hear over 16 million songs and create endless playlists, and it will only improve when users will be able to save those playlists and access them from anywhere with internet access.

Basically, for anybody yearning to listen to a song, there is now a place to just hear it.

Nothing more, nothing less.
