Event coordinators are going the extra mile to promote safety at this weekend’s Tempe Music Festival, officials said.
Festival officials have been partnering with the city of Tempe, Metro Light Rail and sponsors to create a number of ways to create a safe night for those attending, said Alison Bailin, senior account executive for HMA Public Relations.
“The big thing this year is we don’t want drinking and driving,” Bailin said.
The seventh annual Circle K Tempe Music Festival takes place this weekend, April 3 and 4, at Tempe Beach Park.
Metro Light Rail spokesperson Hillary Foose said light-rail service is being extended until 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday to accommodate passengers who will be attending the festival.
The event is set to end around midnight, she said.
It’s not just a matter of safety but also a service for passengers who use the light rail to get to the event to get them back to their starting destinations, she said.
“Special events is really key to the success of the light rail and keeping passengers on the system,” Foose said. “If you took the light rail there, you will take the light rail back.”
Foose said Valley Metro plans to offer the extended service during upcoming special events that occur around the Valley.
She said the extension was a success when done for the NBA All-Star game in downtown Phoenix on Feb. 15.
“It is definitely valuable, and we hope to do more of it in the future as needs arrive,” Foose said.
Soon, extended service will be offered for Diamondbacks games, which tend to run late because of extra innings, Foose said.
In addition to the extension of the light-rail hours, event sponsors are pitching in to help create a safe and fun event, Bailin said.
Event sponsor Jose Cuervo will be giving away 500 free light-rail passes both days, Bailin said.
Hensley & Co. will be conducting a designated-driver incentive and will hand out wristbands to those who pledge to be designated drivers during the event, Bailin said.
The wristbands will guarantee free non-alcoholic beer, soda and water for those who plan on not drinking, Bailin said.
Budweiser’s Family of Beers will be passing out free-taxi-ride coupons as well, Bailin said.
All these offers will be available both Friday and Saturday night.
