The Sun Devil track and field team dazzled spectators at this weekend’s Sun Angel Track Classic.

Amid a hoard of world-class talent, the ASU squad flexed its collective muscle and proved that it can compete with anyone, anytime and in any weather.

The warm conditions that the Sun Devils have grown accustomed to this outdoor season made way for a brisk competition on Saturday.

“I was really pleased with all of our team and how they … [handled] the elements. … They did a nice job,” ASU coach Greg Kraft said.

One of those athletes who seemed to handle the elements the best was senior sprinter Charonda Williams.

Williams’ spikes gobbled up the track on her way to a win in the 100-meter Premier event over the highly touted sprinters from LSU.

Williams really made her presence felt in the 200-meter dash, finishing right on the heels of the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Kerron Stewart from Jamaica.

Once again, Williams left the LSU women in her dust on the way to yet another school record.

Her time of 22.82 seconds bested an 18-year-old record set by former Olympic gold medalist Maicel Malone.

Williams also aided in the 4x100-meter relay team’s second-place finish behind LSU.

The male sprinters received a solid performance from senior Marcus Duncan, as he qualified in both the 100 and 200-meters.

“The 200 was obviously a fast heat,” Duncan said. “[The] first part of my race I could have been a lot more efficient, but racing against professionals, there’s always that thought where it’s always good to try to beat a professional. … So I just tensed up a little.

That slight tense caused Duncan to finish in eighth, but the race was productive for him nonetheless.

Coach Kraft had high praise for Duncan’s performance following the race.

“This was a big mental test for him,” Kraft said. “He’s really talented, and you throw [tonight’s] times out because there [were] a lot of really fast guys in those races. … We really needed that [from Duncan].”

The field events were productive as well, as the Sun Devils continued their dominance in all the throws.

Junior Ryan Whiting won the shot put, freshman Jordan Clarke won the discus, and Jason Lewis took second in the hammer throw.

The women had a great showing by senior standout Sarah Stevens as well.

Stevens won the shot put, took third in the discus and finished fourth in the hammer throw.

Next week, the Sun Devils will head to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC relays.
