For the ASU softball team, this past weekend didn’t go exactly according to plan.
After a 10-8 loss to No. 10 Arizona (33-9, 5-2) on Friday, the Sun Devils’ (34-8, 4-3) chance at redemption was rained out.
Friday’s game was back and forth.
In the second inning, the Wildcats led by two before freshman infielder Katelyn Boyd was brought home by a double from sophomore catcher Kaylyn Castillo. Then, Wildcat pitcher Sarah Akamine walked home a run with the bases loaded.
Two innings later, the Wildcats took the lead again, this time by five, before ASU could come back in the fifth inning.
The Sun Devils collected two hits, a walk and three runs before senior Jessica Mapes hit her first career home run to lift the Sun Devils to their first lead of the game, 8-7.
But the second home run of the day for Sam Banister of the Wildcats gave Arizona the final advantage and end the game 10-8.
The Dual in the Desert continued on Saturday for 2 1/2 innings before the game was called on account of rain.
The Sun Devils and the Wildcats ended the game tied at two and will finish it on April 29 in Tempe.
