If the Mt. SAC relays were a tune-up for this year’s Pac-10 Championships, then the ASU track and field team’s engine is running on all cylinders.

ASU coach Greg Kraft said the meet was supposed to be an opportunity to figure out what combinations of athletes work best in the relays in preparation for the conference meet in May.

Kraft also said the meet would give the athletes an opportunity to run in events that don’t exist during the indoor season.

One of those events was the 5,000 meters.

And junior newcomer Brandon Bethke didn’t disappoint.

Bethke, a transfer from Wisconsin, ran the race in 13:27.74, shattering the ASU record in the event by almost 10 seconds.

As for the relay combinations, the Sun Devils sent a 4x400-meter relay team comprising of juniors Ray Miller and Justin Kremer, senior Darryl Elston and freshman Mason McHenry.

Elston also ran a leg for the 4x100-meter team that included sophomore Bryan Williams, freshman Allante Battle and senior Marcus Duncan.

Both teams successfully qualified for the regional meet later this season.

The women’s relay teams were also successful, as the 4x100-meter squad of sophomores Jasmine Chaney and Dominique’ Maloy and seniors Shauntel Elcock and Charonda Williams took second.

Chaney was a busy woman during the meet, but that didn’t affect her productivity.

She posted the winning time of 13.61 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and met the regional qualifying standards.

Her other wins came as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that smoked the competition, as it won by more than six seconds, and as the top finisher in the 400-meter hurdles.

Both events earned qualifying marks for regionals.

Chaney wasn’t the only woman who took over the individual events.

Williams’ time of 22.84 in the 200-meter dash was good enough for first, and she took seventh in the 100 meters.

Senior Jeavon Benjamin was the other qualifier for the women. She finished with a time of 53.87 in the 400-meters.
