One of the smallest crowds Sun Angel Stadium has held this season was treated to a nine-win outing from the home team as well as an electric performance by one of the best sprinters in the world at the Sun Devil Invitational.

Seven of ASU’s nine wins were notched by the Sun Devil sprinters, who looked as good, if not better, than they have all year.

“Like I told the team … not everybody needs this meet,” ASU coach Greg Kraft said. “But there’s some people that need it, and I thought our guy sprinters needed the meet, and I thought [they] really did well.”

The 100-meter dash was perhaps the only sprint not dominated by ASU.

Valley product Rodney Overton from NAU took first in the event with his teammate Andre Nunis finishing right behind him.

Senior Matt Turner and sophomore Bryan Williams finished third and fourth, respectively, for the Sun Devils, with Turner running unattached.

The performance of the evening for ASU was handed in by senior Marcus Duncan, freshman Allante Battle and senior Darryl Elston, who went one, two, three in the 200-meter dash.

All of them earned regional-qualifying marks.

“Today was basically me trying to put what coach has been telling me into perspective,” Duncan said. “Execution. Execution. Execution. That’s been our main focus all week, Duncan said.”

For the few that were on hand Saturday, the 400-meter dash was certainly a treat, with two former Olympians going one-two.

Tyson Gay, the world champion in the 100- and 200-meters as well as current American record holder in the 100, blazed his way to a win with ASU senior Joel Phillip right on his heels.

Phillip’s mark would have qualified him for regionals, but he is redshirting the outdoor season and was competing unattached for the Sun Devils.

Phillip’s finish was bittersweet after a scary moment for ASU.

Senior Donald Sanford went down hard (going into the first straight away) after an apparent hamstring injury.

He laid on the track for several minutes while the Sun Devil medical staff attended to him but walked off the track under his own power.

The sprinters on the women’s side also had a solid night.

Sophomore Jasmine Chaney continued her winning ways after a very productive outing at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Chaney took first in the 200-meters with a time of 24.32 and freshman teammate Devan Coon took the second spot at 25.50.

The ladies also went one-two in the 100-meters with sophomore Dominique’ Maloy finishing first at 11.92 and freshman Kayla Sanchez took second with a time of 12.10.

Sanchez also won the 400-meter hurdles.

Other wins came in the field from senior Stephanie Garnett in the long jump and junior Erika Simington in the javelin.

Senior Sarah Stevens also pitched in a win over the weekend in La Jolla, Calif., at the UCSD Triton Invitational.

The final home meet of the season is next week’s Double Dual with UA and NAU.
