Members of the ASU track and field team have the opportunity to make their claim for the final roster that the Sun Devils will send to the Pac-10 Championships.
Coach Greg Kraft said his athletes — not the coaching staff — would decide by their performance if they will make the trip to Eugene, Ore.
They will have some extra incentive to pick up wins this weekend with their rivals from Tucson in town.
NAU will send some of its athletes as well, rounding out the field for Saturday’s Double Dual at Sun Angel Stadium.
The Sun Devils have swept the meet the past two years, but the Wildcats and Lumberjacks do not show any signs of going down easily in this year’s installment.
UA is sending three athletes with top-10 national marks. NAU is adding one.
All three of the Wildcats’ stars will be competing in the shot put, which should be a hotly contested event.
Senior Sarah Stevens will make her return to Tempe after winning the shot put at last weekend’s UCSD Triton Invitational.
Stevens is currently ranked No. 1 among Pac-10 shot putters and will compete against the Wildcats’ Nicole Lloyd and Megan Howard, who will bring the conference’s No. 2 and No. 3 rankings, respectively, to Joe Selleh Track.
The men’s competition should be a battle as well, boasting the Pac-10’s top two throwers in UA’s Zach Lloyd (No. 1) and Sun Devil junior Ryan Whiting (No. 2).
Also making a return to the team this weekend is freshman Mason McHenry.
He has been battling an unknown virus for the last week, but he should be ready to go in the 800 meters at this season’s final home meet.
“Hopefully I can go out there and run my race and my sickness won’t affect me that much,” McHenry said. “I’m going to try and keep myself in it and see if I can take the top spot.”
