The No. 2 ASU baseball team (32-9, 15-3 Pac-10) is headed to Corvallis, Ore., to face Oregon State for a three-game set in the team’s last Pac-10 regular-season road trip of the year.

The Sun Devils beat Arizona 20-3 on Wednesday behind a near school-record 13-run outburst in the top of the ninth.

OSU, the only other Pac-10 school in the top 55 in RPI, is four-and-a-half games behind ASU in the conference, but 25-11 overall.

Many felt the Beavers would be a threat to win the conference with 23 returning letterman.

OSU, though, has struggled in conference play, losing the series to USC and UCLA.

Statistically, the Beavers have the second-best pitching staff in the conference, the second in fielding and are the fourth-best hitting team.

While OSU doesn’t have a pitcher in the top 10 in ERA, two of its starters are in the top 10 in innings pitched — Jorge Reyes (3.45 ERA) and Tyler Waldron (5.00).

OSU’s third starter Greg Peavey is 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA.

OSU sophomore Kevin Rhoderick is seventh in the conference with five saves.

OSU junior Ryan Ortiz, a first-baseman and catcher, is fourth in the conference in batting average at .379.

While the Beavers as a team have hit for a high average, their power numbers are extremely low.

As a team, the Beavers have 14 home runs and also rank second-to-last in the conference in doubles and triples. ASU juniors Jason Kipnis and Carlos Ramirez have nearly as many home runs as the whole OSU team, with 12 and 13, respectively.

The Sun Devils continue to earn accolades for their pitching performances.

Three ASU pitchers are in the running for the inaugural National Pitcher of the Year Award.

ASU juniors Mike Leake (10-1, 1.54) and Josh Spence (8-1, 2.23) and freshman Mitchell Lambson (6-2, 3.13) are in the running for the award.

ASU is one of only two schools to have three pitchers in contention for the honor.

ASU may be without the services of Spence this weekend, as the junior continues to recover from a hand injury.

After the three-game road-trip, the Sun Devils will return home to play five nonconference games against Winthrop and San Diego, one nonconference road game against UA and the final six Pac-10 games of the year — all at home against Oregon and UCLA.
