If you give a football player the choice between playing and sitting, he’s going to play.

And in some cases, the player will disregard the medical opinions of different doctors, risking permanent damage.

It’s a warrior mentality.

Shawne Merriman, the star linebacker for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, has decided to forgo surgery and start the season — even if it means playing with tears in both the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee.

Bad idea, right?

Well, for the last three seasons, “Lights Out” has been the face of the Charger defense, boasting 39½ sacks and participating in three straight Pro Bowls.

Maybe it is better to sacrifice the present for a healthier future. But how do you tell a warrior to sit down?

You don’t.

The Chargers have taken a lot of flak for allowing this to happen, battling remarks against pride and the best interest for one of their most talented players.

But it comes down to this: Merriman will play because he can. Merriman will play, because it’s his job.

Is he better off having the surgery?

Probably.

Is he at risk of wearing out the cartilage in his knee, and threatening his career? Absolutely.

Still, all pride aside, playing makes more sense to Merriman.
More power to him.

Go Chargers.
