Baseball No. 5 national seed, will face Kent State in Tempe Regional

The ASU baseball team’s road to Omaha will begin in the friendly confines of Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils (44-12) were selected as the No. 5 national seed in the NCAA Tournament Monday morning and will host a regional this weekend.

ASU is the top seed in the regional and will first face No. 4-seed Kent State, the champions of the Mid-American conference, on Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 2-seed Oral Roberts and third-seeded Cal Poly will be the other two teams participating in the Tempe Regional and will square off on Friday at 2 p.m.

This is the third year in a row that ASU will host a regional after the Sun Devils won their third straight outright Pac-10 championship last weekend.

The winner of the double-elimination regional will advance to a best-of-three super regional against the winner of the Clemson Regional. The winners of the eight super regionals will then advance to the College World Series, which begins June 13 in Omaha, Neb.

Texas is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, with No. 2 Cal State Fullerton, No. 3 LSU, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 8 Florida rounding out the other national seeds.
