Three Sun Devils selected on first day of MLB draft

ASU junior pitcher Mike Leake, junior center fielder Jason Kipnis and junior pitcher Josh Spence were all taken on the first day of the MLB draft on Tuesday.

Leake was selected eighth overall by the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the 25th first-round draft pick in the history of the program.

Leake is the two-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the year and a finalist for the Golden Spikes award for the National Player of the Year. He leads the nation with 16 wins and ranks second behind San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall draft pick, in ERA (1.36) and strikeouts (150).

Leake is the highest Sun Devil drafted since Ryan Mills was selected sixth overall by the Minnesota Twins in 1998.

Kipnis was taken with the No. 63 pick by the Cleveland Indians, while Spence was the last pick of the third round (No. 110 overall) by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Kipnis was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year last month after leading the Sun Devils in batting average (.380) and hits (76) during the regular season.

Spence is 9-1 so far this season with a 2.33 ERA in 13 starts. He has battled hand and back injuries in recent weeks, but he pitched a complete game and struck out 10 in Sunday’s 8-2 Super Regional win against Clemson.

In addition to the current Sun Devils taken, two ASU signees were also picked on the first day of the draft.

Nolan Arenado, a third baseman and catcher out of El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif., was taken in the second round (No. 59 overall) by the Colorado Rockies. Jake Barrett, a local product out of Mesa Desert Ridge High School, was selected 99th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays.
