Former ASU golfer Azahara Munoz won the 2009 Ladies British Open amateur championship Saturday at the Royal St. David's Golf Club in North Wales.
Munoz defeated her former college teammate, ASU sophomore Carlota Ciganda, 2 and 1 in the tournament's final round.
It was the first all-Spanish final in the history of the tournament.
Munoz and Ciganda each shot an 8-under 138 in the two qualifying rounds to grab the top two seeds heading into match play. They each then beat five golfers in match play to set up the all-ASU final round.
ASU sophomore Giulia Molinaro and incoming freshman Alessia Knight also competed in the tournament. Knight fell in the first round of match play, while Molinaro did not qualify.
This is the third year in a row a current or former ASU player has won the Ladies British amateur championship. Former Sun Devil Anna Nordqvist, who won the LPGA Championship on Sunday, won the title in 2008, and Ciganda took home the crown in 2007.
Munoz, who finished her ASU career last month, won the NCAA Individual Championship in 2008 and helped lead the Sun Devils to the team national title this past season. She will compete in the U.S. Women's Open as an amateur in July.
