ASU’s soccer team is used to covering a lot of ground.

The players run for 90 minutes, always in constant motion, somehow finding a way to pick up the pace and burst into a full sprint when necessary.

But Sunday’s 4-0 win against Weber State allowed the team to discover new ground.

“I’m not taking anything away from Weber State, but I thought we were the better team,” coach Kevin Boyd said. “This game allowed us to give our younger players a little bit of experience.

“It’s what, the fifth game, and we haven’t been able to do that yet. That will help us down the road.”

Coming off of a 1-0 loss to Texas Christian University on Friday, the Sun Devils (2-2-1) were looking for ways to improve.

“For the second game in a row, we did not play well in the first half,” Boyd said. “In the second half, our intensity improved and we started to play our game, but we did a poor job finishing when we had opportunities.”

After a slow start on Sunday, the players found a way to turn it around.

"We were doing what we needed to do to be competitive,” Boyd said.

“The next thing I told them was that it was boring. We needed to work on keeping the ball and being more creative."

So that’s what the Sun Devil players focused on doing.

“Kevin told us we needed to be more dynamic on the field,” freshman forward Sierra Cook said. “Once we got one goal everything turned around.

“We knew [that] once we scored one, we would have it, we just had to get over that bump.”

Cook, who notched her first two collegiate goals and one assist, helped to keep the momentum up in the second half after sophomore defender Jessie Richardson fell on account of a numb leg.

“Whenever anything happens, we try to focus and come together as a team,” Cook said. “That’s exactly what we did today with the injury.”

Richardson returned to the game in the second half, but that wasn’t the only injury of the day. Junior midfielder Carly Kallas also went down after being hit by the opposing goalkeeper.

Sophomore forward Karin Volpe and redshirt freshman forward Erica Long each added one to the score, while junior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri had two saves.
