While most ASU students are racing to get to class on time this fall, two can be seen on national television racing across continents.

Starting Sept. 28, ASU alumnus Dan Honig and senior Andrew Lappitt will be appearing on the 13th season of CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”

Honig and Lappitt, or “Team Superbad,” as some of the other 10 competing teams called them, traveled more than 30,000 miles across five continents in the span of the 23-day race, according to the CBS Web site.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Honig said. “It was an honor to be selected out of the thousands of people that applied.”

Honig, who graduated from ASU in December with a degree in tourism management, said he came across the CBS Web site shortly before the deadline to audition for the show.

After Honig convinced Lappitt to try out with him, the pair rushed out to create a short video to send to CBS.

“It was really low-budget,” said Lappitt, an urban planning senior. “We pretty much just turned on the camera and improvised the whole thing.”

Lappitt said he was skeptical about the pair’s chances.

“When CBS called to tell us we made it, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I thought it was our friends pulling a prank. I thought it was a joke.”

Honig agreed: “It was surreal, incomprehensible.”

Honig and Lappitt, both members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, had known each other for nearly four years before trying out for the show.

Lappitt said that while the show strengthened their relationship, the two needed a break when taping was over.

“Being around someone 24-7 can be rough, no matter who you are,” he said. “When the show was over, we definitely needed some time away from each other.”

Things are back to normal now, and both said they are excited to see themselves on television.

Lappitt has already had his first brush with fame. On the first day of class this semester, a fellow student approached him and asked for his autograph.

“She said, ‘Oh my God, it’s you! You’re in the race! I saw on the Internet that you went to ASU and here you are!’” Lappitt said. “I definitely wasn’t expecting that. I was like, ‘Yeah … sweet.’”

According to the CBS Web site, the newest season of “The Amazing Race” will feature a number of firsts, including teams traveling to a floating city surrounded by water and first-time visits to locations like Cambodia and Kazakhstan.

Honig said he and Lappitt went through a variety of challenges on the show that were both physically and mentally straining.

“It’s a stressful situation,” Honig said. “It’s definitely not easy. It’s not a vacation.”

Though the show was challenging, Honig said he learned a lot from the experience.

“You have to go into things with an open mind, no matter what your fears are,” Honig said. “If you want something badly enough, you just have to go for it.”

Lappitt said he did his best to make his fellow ASU students proud.

“I feel I put on very good performance,” Lappitt said. “I did my best to represent the things I stand for and make the least mistakes.”

“The Amazing Race” airs locally Sunday nights on KPHO (Channel 5), starting Sept. 28.
