Joe Wilson taught your toddler to swear.
Joe Wilson canceled “Arrested Development.”
Joe Wilson heated up leftover fish in your office’s microwave.
The previous statements are all untrue (as far as I know). They are from the Web site joewilsonisyourpreexistingcondition.com, a humorous collection of lies about Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC.
Joewilsonisyourpreexistingcondition.com is the most civil political discourse surrounding health care reform since “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” went on hiatus.
It never tries to pass the bizarre claims and flat-out lies about Wilson as truths.
It achieves its political goal with a link in the corner to donate to Wilson’s upcoming opponent, Democrat Rob Miller. It resembles Chuck Norris jokes more than political attacks.
Wilson’s nefarious fake exploits have sprung out of a real one. The congressman from South Carolina shouted “You lie” at President Barack Obama during his health care speech to a joint session of Congress last Wednesday.
Wilson has since apologized for his inappropriate outburst, but that hasn’t stopped him from using his new fame to call for campaign contributions. And he — as well as his opponent — has gotten them.
Why would people donate to or vote for a politician because he threw a temper tantrum? Because those donors and voters have demonstrated they like shouting down orderly speakers just as much as Wilson does.
His flare-up mirrored those of the town hall meetings in the past few months. Numerous interrupters used the First Amendment as an excuse to shout down town hall speakers.
But prescribing disrespectful behavior to Republicans is disingenuous, given how left-wing protesters staged similar protests against the war.
But the tone of both protests is still less preferable to the tone of the Joe Wilson site. Humor makes people happy; anger rarely leaves anybody satisfied.
Is a public option really so detestable that you need to bring guns to where Obama is speaking? There is not a fine line between protecting yourself and intimidating others. The line is very thick and has clearly been crossed, especially considering previous presidential encounters with guns.
For years, “The Daily Show” and later “The Colbert Report” demonstrated the humor in politics and political news coverage. But those shows are mostly liberal. Where is the humor from the right?
I hope their humor isn’t the signs that compare health care reform to the Holocaust and slavery or ripping up posters of Rosa Parks.
Liberals and conservatives will never agree. Canada will invade the Dakotas before there is major bipartisan cooperation on anything important. Why can’t people have fun not agreeing?
Congeniality may be lying. At least it’s the kind we can all enjoy.
Either way, life goes on.
Except for grandma, of course. And unborn babies.
See what I did there? I made a little joke. Try it sometime.
