Carson Palmer is right: “Somebody is going to die in the NFL.”

The Bengal quarterback had the right idea when he told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that the football field is a dangerous place for an athlete.

Professional football players are no strangers to concussions and other brain-related injuries.

Three active NFL players joined Palmer in his quest for safety Monday when they agreed to join a study conducted by Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy.

Sean Morey of the Arizona Cardinals, Matt Birk of the Baltimore Ravens and Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks have all agreed to donate their brain and spinal cord tissue after they die.

While a handful of players are concerned about their well-being, the NFL should get behind its players and put money toward the research and development of safer padding and helmets.

Brain injuries are a major issue in professional sports, and the natural progression from brain injuries to death is becoming more and more likely as the game becomes more and more violent.
