When it comes to drops, ASU senior wide receiver Kyle Williams believes it’s better to forget than be forgiven.
Lost in the Sun Devils’ 50-3 romp over Idaho State two weeks ago were three catchable balls that slipped through the grip of the normally sure-handed Williams — two of which came near the end zone.
“It was last [game],” Williams said. “It already happened, and it’s been put behind us.”
With 55 career receptions, including 10 touchdown grabs, Williams doesn’t need immediate vindication for a single poor performance, nor does the burden for ASU’s inefficient week one passing offense fall on his hands alone.
Collectively, ASU’s receiving corps had six drops against ISU. Senior Chris McGaha avoided the drop-itis, and he doesn’t see it becoming contagious the rest of the way.
Amnesia is the antidote.
“As soon as it happens, you’ve got to put it away like it never did,” McGaha said.
With Louisiana-Monroe coming into town Saturday, the receiving unit has a chance at redemption — not that the collective career histories of its members reveal it needs it.
“It happens to everybody, but it doesn’t happen to us often,” McGaha said.
Vindication is just another big score for the Scrabble board. ULM’s scrambling defense will provide the chance for a six-point word on ASU’s scoreboard.
Touchdown.
“Whenever a team blitzes and brings pressure like that, we can get the ball two or three yards [out] and turn it into a big play,” Williams said.
ASU coach Dennis Erickson once again reaffirmed his receivers’ week one performance was an anomaly following Thursday’s practice.
“They caught the ball very well in practice [this week],” Erickson said. “I expect them to do the same thing Saturday night.”
ASU’s wideouts are due, and given ULM’s scheme, Erickson may have a chance to see senior quarterback Danny Sullivan have his first big game as a starter.
“You have to get the ball to the playmakers and let them make plays,” Erickson said.
Erickson ruled out playing sophomore offensive lineman Garth Gerhart (toe) unless an emergency situation occurs. Gerhart will dress.
Erickson said sophomore quarterback Samson Szakacsy is healthy enough to take snaps, though Erickson did not say if that was in the plans.
True freshman linebacker Vontaze Burfict has taken many snaps with the first unit this week and could start on Saturday.
Burfict recorded five tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in his collegiate debut against Idaho State.
