The No. 1 ASU women’s golf team is heading to Tennessee this weekend to compete in the Mason Rudolph Invitational.
The three-day tournament, which the team placed fifth in last year, will be held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
The Sun Devils’ lineup will feature junior Jaclyn Sweeney, senior Juliana Murcia, sophomores Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro and freshman Jennifer Johnson.
That lineup, with the exception of Johnson, took the title at the TOPY Cup on Sept. 10 in Japan.
The team’s win, with an accumulated score of 6-under 858, marked the fourth time in history the team won that tournament.
ASU’s talented lineup will compete against 17 other schools this weekend, including No. 2 USC, No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 Oklahoma State.
Golf World Magazine’s “Top 50 Female Players to Watch” named four Sun Devil golfers to watch during the 2009-2010 season in Ciganda, Johnson, Sweeney and Murcia.
Sweeney won the medal in the Topy Cup with a score of 5-under 211.
The win was her first individual title as a Sun Devil.
ASU coach Melissa Luellen said she is excited for the upcoming tournament because of how well the team has been performing.
“We just finished our practice round, and it went really well,” Luellen said. “We have a really talented team, and it’s been great interacting with our new players during the practice round.”
Luellen said although the course is currently really wet from recent rainstorms, the field is excellent and is comparable to any NCAA Championship field.
