After a shaky first round full of inclement weather, the ASU women’s golf team finished fourth in the Mason Rudolph Championship over the weekend.

Lightning and heavy thunderstorms caused the second round of the tournament to be canceled.

After the three-day tournament that turned into two, the team tied with Duke with a score of 11-under par 565.

Pac-10 foes USC and UCLA finished first and second, respectively.

Individually, the team finished with impressive scores.

Freshman Jennifer Johnson finished the tournament tied for seventh place with a score of 5-under 139. The top-10 finish came in what was Johnson’s debut with ASU.

Senior Juliana Murcia also cracked the top 20 with a 3-under 141, which was good enough for a 15th-place tie.

Sophomore Giulia Molinaro scored a 2-under 70 in the first round of the tournament and finished with an even-par 144 to finish in a tie for 30th.

Junior Jaclyn Sweeney and sophomore Carlota Ciganda both tied for 40th with a 1-over 145 for the tournament.

ASU coach Melissa Luellen said although the scoring was low, she was happy with the results.

“The course was really soft and receptive to the shots with no wind on the first day, so scoring conditions were perfect,” Luellen said. “On the second day, we went to the movies.”

Because of the team’s flight, it only played 18 holes on the first day and it turned into a 36-hole tournament.

“After 36 holes we were wanting one more day,” Luellen said. “We have never won that tournament and we ended up OK; it was a good place to get started.”

Luellen was particularly impressed with Johnson’s top-10 finish, especially because this was her first tournament as a Sun Devil.

“The scoring was extremely low because we played preferred lies because of the rain,” she said.

Preferred lies means the condition on the course is so poor, a player can position his or her ball within six inches of the original position by placing the ball on the ground.

The team will next head to Stanford, Calif. for the Stanford Intercollegiate from Oct. 16 to 18.
